IS PRACTICING WITH MY HANDGUN THE SAME AS TRAINING?

So, do you practice with your handgun or do you train with it?

Most people say that, when they go to the range to shoot, it's the same as training. If done properly, using correct techniques, it IS training. However, even if you learn to put a nice tight pattern on your target using what you consider your best stance and grip, proper sight alignment and picture, pulling the trigger smoothly and following up, you are missing out on so much more you could do to protect yourself and others from harm.

The last time you went to the range, did you work on your draw? Did you move off point to shoot? Did you work on going to cover? Did you engage multiple threat targets? Chances are, you didn't. The reason I know this is because most people go to indoor ranges to shoot. Most indoor ranges do not have the facilities for actual training. This means that your shooting is limited to "practice" with your pistol.

Don't get me wrong; nothing replaces ordinary old trigger time. This is where you perfect the things I mentioned above: stance, grip, sight alignment, sight picture, breathing, trigger pull and follow through. The only problem is, when you get into a real situation, you perform like you practiced. If you practiced static, controlled shooting, you will stand in place and shoot, making you a target.

Since outdoor ranges are getting scarce, you have to use your imagination to train. Find you an instructor who has access to outdoor areas where you can train without live rounds/guns. I know it sounds crazy but, you can train without ammo. You went to the indoor range to work on shooting techniques and to practice. This time you are training. This is where you work on your tactics and survival skills. This is where you actually learn to survive on the street. This is where you learn to draw, move to cover, etc. These are things that increase your chances of survival.

At 901 FT we are working on areas that we can train the individual citizen to survive an attack on the street; at the mall, in a store or wherever they may be. We can teach you to react to weapon/ammo malfunctions, function your weapon proficiently, react to individual and multiple threats and to come out on top in a use of force situation. Contact us for information on how we can help you attain your goals in training.
