WHY DO WE CELEBRATE MEMORIAL DAY?

This is just a short one today. Often, when I am at a store, I'm told "Happy Memorial Day" and thanked for my service. I appreciate the sentiment but, Memorial Day is not my day-or the day of any other veteran who returned home from serving our country.

Here are how the holidays run to remember:

  1. Memorial Day-Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. We remember the soldiers who paid the ultimate price to defend our freedoms. They did not return. Each of us that serve or served do so with the understanding that there is a good chance that we may have to pay that price. The ones of us that return are the fortunate ones who did not. We, along with everyone else who enjoys the freedoms this country provides, should remember those individuals who never came back and be thankful for them.

  2. Armed Forces Day-Celebrated the third Saturday in May. Armed Forces Day is used to honor the men and women currently serving in the military.

  3. Veterans Day-Veteran's day is the day we honor those who served and are no longer in the military. That's the day for those of us who have hung up our uniforms.

There are other days that are celebrated by branch of service, awards earned and even days reserved to honor the families of veterans. The three above are the main ones that are confused. So, please try to remember which is which.

Thank you all for honoring our fallen this Monday, May 29, 2023.
